Impact Of Social Media In The Classroom
Internet has become a significant part of our lives, and so has Social Media. The most affected by it are today’s teens. Social media usage is nearly universal among today’s teens, and almost all of them use atleast one of the major online platforms. The amount of time that they spend on social media is too high. Using social media has both its advantages and disadvantages and impacts everyone’s lives, especially teens.
In terms of academic usage in classrooms, it offers greater convenience and relevance.
It can enhance classroom engagement by offering quick access to educational resources and better explanation of difficult concepts.
On the negative side, it can cause distraction also from the main content, thus resulting in reduced productivity.
There is a huge possibility of wrong information and content posted for fun and marketing on the Online platforms, thus leading to misconcepts for the students.
It is difficult to keep a check on the students to verify, if their usage is for academics or inappropriate content.
However much you may want to control, but the fear of missing out amongst teens, makes them addicted, thus leading to increased usage of social media. This makes them go through self image issues which often lead to depression and anxiety.
So, for an effective usage and best output, parents and mentors must model exemplary behaviour themselves. They should set boundaries and have open conversations about the safety and privacy concerns. They should actively engage on having genuine conversations and not just lecture the kids.
To conclude, as every other invention and technology, social media can be a boon or bane, depending upon how we use it.
