Tips to Score Well in Board Examination

Board Exams should be just taken as a routine exam and one should not feel pressurized or stressed with the term BOARD.

There are no shortcuts to success, so to get a good score in Board Exams, the students should be consistent in their efforts.

A time table should be planned and adhered to, so that all the concepts of every subject are covered and revised well in time. One should avoid distraction but must keep sometime for relaxation.Choose a calm and peaceful environment for studies and set small and achievable targets to be accomplished everyday.

Consider NCERT as your Bible and practice attempting the previous years’ papers in the given time duration.

Now let’s talk on how to study chemistry for XII Board Exams :

The chemistry syllabus is primarily divided into three parts – Physical Chemistry, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry.

The main emphasis in Physical Chemistry is on numericals. All the numericals from first fourchapters – Solid State, Solution, Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics.

Use log and antilog for easier calculation if you are comfortable.Give more emphasis on In-text, examples, back questions and numericals given in NCERT.

Solid State is an important and easy chapter in Physical Chemistry. The topics to be laid more emphasis in Solid State is Crystalline / Amorphous differences, Packing efficiency in unit cells, density numericals, stoichiometric / non-stoichiometric and impuritydefects.

In the chapter Solution, one should not miss the important topics like colligative properties and its numericals, Raults law and its deviations with examples and graphs. Henry’s law with application, Osmosis / Reverse Osmosis and the numericals related to Van’t Hoff Factor.

The most significant topics of Electrochemistry are Kohlrausch law and Applications, Faraday’s law and products of electrolysis, graph for variation in molar conductivity with dilution for strong and weak electrolytes, Lead storage batteryreactions on charging and discharging.

In Chemical Kinetics focus on numerical on first order and Arrhenius equation along with the Pseudo first order reaction and explanation with examples. The graph and derivation with slope for zero and first order reaction.

In the chapter Surface Chemistry, theoretical concepts along with the explanation of Frendulich adsorption isotherm and difference between lyopholic colloids and lyophidic colloids, conceptual equations on application of colloids.

Extraction is one such chapter where following topics like Blast Furnace, Zone refining, Monds process, electrolytic refining and Vanarkel method are important one.

P-Block is the most important chapter and carries the maximum weightage.15th and 18th group are the most important ones and their reactions too. For better understanding one should learn reactions of one group at a time and must revise them respectively. Practice shortcuts for finding hybridization, emphasise on conceptual questions, orders and structures of Phosphoric acid, Sulphuric acid, Halous acids etc.

In the chapter d and f-Block the conceptual question on physical properties of transition element along with preparations their oxidizing character and lanthanoid contraction cause and consequences.

Coordination compounds should be focused upon the naming, structure and hybridization of complexes and questions on crystal field theory with diagrams.Application of Coordination Compound and Isomerism in Coordination Compounds should be given utmost priority.

For Organic Chemistry prepare all intext examples and back questions. Go through mechanism and order of reactivity. Distinguish tests and conversation. It is vital to remember. Important name reactions such as :

  • Finkelstein
  • Swartz
  • Hydroboration – oxidation
  • Kolbe’s reaction
  • Reimer Tiemann
  • Williamson’s synthesis and limitations
  • Etard reaction
  • Stephen reaction
  • Aldol condensation (self and crossed products)
  • Cannizzaro
  • Hoffmann Bromamide degradation
  • HVZ
  • Gabriel pthalimide synthesis

Mechanism mainly comes from alcohol phenol chapter and reasoning questions and orders on basic strength from Nitrogen Containing Compounds. Questions with word problems mainly from Aldehyde / Ketones / Carboxylic acid are of great significance.

In the chapter of Biomolecules, the reactions of glucose, structures of glucose / fructose, hydrolysis products and difference between (a) Fibrous and Globular protein and (b) DNA / RNA should be prepared thoroughly. The uses and sources of vitamins along with uses, deficiency diseases are important topics to be covered.

For the Polymers, all monomers and formation of polymers with uses should be studied along with differences between (a) Thermosetting and Thermoplastic polymers (b) Homopolymer and Copolymers (c) High density and low density polyethene.

It is not difficult to score good marks in Chemistry but what is required is focused and dedicated approach for the subject instead of doing lot of it together one must do little bit daily and revise concepts regularly to unravel the mystery of chemistry and reach the zenith of success.
